Sipping coffee at the Cafe du Metro on a September Saturday afternoon, a brisk coolness in the air, the aroma of early fall mixed with strong coffee. This beautiful church, the second largest (Notre Dame takes the cake), looms above the rooftops throughout the 6eme arrondissement.

I can still feel the sand beneath my feet and the crunch and dust, the heavy chairs metal dragged through the sand, kicking up trails of white sand dust. lived a block away from the Jardin du Luxemourg and quite often brewed a cup of Earl Grey tea, grabbed a magazine, and spent the afternoon in the cool early Spring sun.

musée d'orsay

paris, france | 2014

One of my favorite museums as a young person living in Paris. Unlike the Louvre, digestible in half a day and a great little café behind the translucent giant clock faces to relax and people watch. The museum, formerly a train station, houses the best of the impressionists and my favorite work by Gustave Caillebotte, Vue de Toits, Effet de Neige (Snow Covered Rooftops). Captured aboard a Bateaux Mouches along the Seine approaching Pont Royal mid-day.

quai des grands augustins

paris, france | 2014

Long before living in Paris, I was gifted a book on Paris. I flipped through the pages, imagining the lives of those living behind each of these small orderly windows looking out onto the Île de la Cité. In my imagination, lives of those along the most posh place in Paris existed only in beautiful clothing, eating only the most resplendent food, and spent leisurely days walking languidly along the quai. Even as an adult, I choose to hold that idea. That is the preservation of a dream. Of an idea. Of a hope of a beautiful life lived along the quai.

the four winds

paris, france | 2014

Late in the morning, early September 2014 at the Louvre. Relief on ceiling of archway at the opening to the Cour Napoléon (main court) of four angels ready to exhale a counterbalancing gust. The dial is pointing north to south. The light in the tunnel is somewhat subdued in the early part of day in the fall, so it took a bit of work to expose for the soft highlights while still preserving details of each individual carved block.

before the fire

paris, france | 2014

The day Notre Dame burned, April 15, 2019, and the 315-foot, 800-year-old spire collapsed to the ground, I could only watch in disbelief. I immediately went to look for this image in my archives and was glad to have what at the time of taking it felt a little overdone and redundant. It felt expendable to me. But, as all things change, the idea of this not only as existing evidence, but as an ephemeral and limited edition print feels satisfying and reassuring. It is knowledge that the beauty and value of all art lives on.

louvre des antiquaires

paris, france | 2014

Undoubtedly, Paris is perhaps the single-most beautiful city architecturally. When Haussman embarked on the urban renewal program in early 19th century Paris, he had so much more than foresight. He had vision. Around every corner and down every street is a visually striking image. In this case, the Le Louvre des Antiquaires at left, formerly the Grand Hôtel du Louvre built in 1855, forms perfect vanishing horizon leading lines vis-à-vis the Louvre on the right. Early Sunday morning on the Place du Palais-Royal.

equestrian louis xiv

paris, france | 2014

It is every commissioned artists' greatest fear : disappointing the client. Imagine when none other than Bernini, presented the marble bust of Louis XIV in , that the king hated it so much he placed it in the corner of the palace gardens of Versailles. It would take years later to complete the entire work including horses and wouldn't be complete until after Louis XIV's death. This now stands in the open court of the Louvre. I was drawn to the statue for its texture and the play on shadow and light. The patina and granular environmental wear are visible seem tactile (though the statue is on a pedestal too high to reach). Both its original beauty and the endurance through time are striking.

skewed perspective

paris, france | 2014

The Louvre museum is incredibly photogenic, if not enormous. While it's easy to find something beautiful at any angle, it can also feel "overdone" and challenging to find new angles and perspectives. That, along with lighting, people everywhere during daylight hours, and weather, make the task surprisingly difficult. Beyond any other frame, I found this one most interesting in its unusual (and seemingly disharmonious) perspective. I photographed upward on a sunny morning with the 70-200 from a distance, which contributes to the compression, light flare from above, and grain.

val-de-grâce

paris, france | 2014

While living in Paris, this was my view each and every morning as I ran down six flights of rickety spiral stairs from my 150 sq.ft. chambre de bonne, out the door, round to the front of the building, across Boulevard Saint Michel, and down this narrow Rue du Val de Grace to the Boulangerie de la Place for my daily baguette. A magnificent sight any time of the day and a memory of a treasured time of my life.
