anticipated ascent

paris, france | 2014

Late in the morning, early September 2014 at the Eiffel Tower. When you live in a place (any place), the tourist attractions are often overlooked as just such. I lived in Paris in the early 90s and never ascended the whole time I lived there. I often imagined getting around to it at some point, but there was never a pressing need or reason to stand in such a long line. I'm thankful for my family who gave me reason to finally get around to going, even if 20 years after living there. It was a long-anticipated ascent. We arrived this morning a bit late in the game, sure to encounter major crowds. The image includes the view of Champ de Mars and École Militaire in the distance.

Nothing is more Parisian than sipping coffee at the Café du Metro on a September Saturday afternoon, the early fall mixed with smell of sweet, strong coffee. This beautiful church, the second largest in Paris (Notre Dame holds the record), looms above the rooftops throughout the 6th arrondissement.

jardin du luxembourg

paris, france | 2014

This image is a perfect representation of all my time spent in Paris over the course of 30 years. As a poor student in 1993, some of my best Saturdays were spent in Paris were doing nothing at all. I would often brew a cup of hot Earl Grey, walk a block from my apartment to the gardens, and drag the heavy metal chairs through the dusty, chalky sand, into a perfect people watching spot. That was my afternoon. It was pretty much what I could afford. And it was what would turn out to be the most glorious time of my life. Years later, I returned as Director of International Programs at Cornell Law School and would be a guest at the Sénat (building in the background) as a liaison for the a group of 150 of legal scholars from 35 countries. As I always say, I experienced the best of Paris -- I had time but no money, then money but no time -- just not all at once. Most recently, my family returned with our then six-year-old son, Connor, and we spent two full days playing at the boats in the pond and on the playscape just out of camera view. I laughed at the irony of flying across the Atlantic Ocean only to spend the whole weekend at the park. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

musée d'orsay

paris, france | 2014

Unlike the Louvre, the Museé d'Orsay is digestible in half a day and boasts a great little café behind the translucent giant clock faces to relax and people watch. The museum, formerly a train station, houses the best of the impressionists and my favorite work by Gustave Caillebotte, Vue de Toits, Effet de Neige (Snow Covered Rooftops). Captured aboard a Bateaux Mouches along the Seine approaching Pont Royal.

quai des grands augustins

paris, france | 2014

Long before living in Paris, I was gifted a book on the city. As I flipped through the pages of glossy photographs, I imagined the lives of those living behind the walls of apartments looking onto the Seine. In my mind, these people existed only in beautiful clothing, ate only the most resplendent food, and spent leisurely days walking languidly along the quai. They read beautiful leather-bound books. They visited galleries. Their lives were exempt from the minutiae of a trivial, life. As an adult, I choose to hold onto this idea. In our complex, encumbered lives, the lives lived along the Quai des Grands Augustins are out of a perfect picture book.

the four winds

paris, france | 2014

Late in the morning in early September 2014, we walked through the breezeway entrances to the Louvre. I spotted this relief on ceiling of archway at the opening to the Cour Napoléon (main court) of four angels ready to exhale a counterbalancing gust. The dial is pointing north to south. The light in the tunnel is somewhat subdued in the early part of day, so it took a bit of work to expose for the soft highlights while still preserving details of each individual carved block.

before the fire

paris, france | 2014

The day Notre Dame burned, April 15, 2019, and the 315-foot, 800-year-old spire collapsed to the ground, I stood at my television screen thousands of miles away and watched in disbelief. I immediately went to look for this image in my archives and was glad to have what at the time of taking it felt a little redundant and overplayed. When I took the image, it felt expendable to me. But, as all things change, the idea of this not only as existing evidence, but as an ephemeral and limited edition print feels satisfying and reassuring. It is knowledge that the beauty and value of all art lives on.

along the quai

paris, france | 2014

One of the best places to walk in Paris is along the lower quai platform. I lived about a half mile south of this area and would spend long summer and spring days exploring the river by foot. I have wonderful memories of beautiful views (and sometimes less than beautiful smells) walking along this stretch beneath the Pont Neuf, stopping to eat lunch, window shop, and wind my way back home.

louvre des antiquaires

paris, france | 2014

Undoubtedly, Paris is perhaps the single-most beautiful city architecturally. When Haussman embarked on the urban renewal program in early 19th century Paris, he had so much more than foresight. He had vision. Around every corner and down every street is a beautifully-framed, visually striking image. In this case, the Le Louvre des Antiquaires at left, formerly the Grand Hôtel du Louvre built in 1855, forms perfect vanishing horizon leading lines vis-à-vis the Louvre at right. Taking in an early Sunday morning on the Place du Palais-Royal.

equestrian louis xiv

paris, france | 2014

Disappointing the client is an artist's greatest fear. Imagine when the renowned Italian sculptor, Bernini, presented the marble bust of Louis XIV in 1685, that the king hated it so much he hid it in the corner of the palace gardens of Versailles, likely behind a hedge. It would take years later to complete the work as seen to day, years after Louis XIV's death. This now stands in the open court of the Louvre. I was drawn to the statue for its texture and the play on shadow and light. The patina and granular environmental wear seem visibly tactile and I really wanted to reach out and touch it to see (the statue is on a pedestal too high to reach which which kept me on my best museum behavior).

skewed perspective

paris, france | 2014

The Louvre museum is incredibly photogenic, if not enormous. While it's easy to find something beautiful at any angle, it can also feel challenging to find new angles and perspectives. That, along with lighting, people everywhere during daylight hours, and weather, make the task surprisingly difficult. Beyond any other frame, I found this one most interesting in its unusual (and seemingly disharmonious) perspective. I photographed upward on a sunny morning with the 70-200 from a distance, which contributes to the compression, light flare from above, and grain.

This was my view each and every morning as I ran down six flights of rickety spiral stairs from my 150 sq.ft. chambre de bonne, out the door, round to the front of the building, across Boulevard Saint Michel, and down this narrow Rue du Val de Grâce to the Boulangerie de la Place for my daily baguette. I remember the first few mornings feeling so nervous to say the wrong thing that I simply ordered what the woman ahead of me ordered (pain de mie). L'Institut de France houses a consortium of academies and is connected with the Louvre just across the river by the Pont des Arts, or Lock Bridge. velleda

paris, france | 2014

Valleda, Etienne Hippolyte Maindron's instant success, brought him the princely sum of FF 12,000 in 1839. I've seen versions of the story of this statue. The most remarkable is one of a young woman is falsely imprisoned and who falls in love with her prisoner. Out of embarrassment, the prisoner sets Velleda free, only for her to return and pine for him, leaning against a tree. A sickle protrudes from behind along her side. The story claims that Velleda killed herself out of the pain of unrequited love.

paris, france | 2014

Even the mundane civic details (a light pole, a street sign) in Paris are works of art. This sign post is particularly memorable as it is the one on the street where I lived and the closest to my front door. How enchanting to open the door every day onto the gardens and observatory in such a beautiful place.

boulangerie saint michel

paris, france | 2014

Interestingly, I've passed by this boulangerie a million times and still have never gone in. I've always been taken by the fork in the road -- always an invitation to new adventures -- and the visual symmetry the tapered building provides. I consider this the "entrance" of sorts to the Latin Quarter, not far from where I lived.

promenade

paris, france | 2014

I've spent many hours walking, running, and wandering through the Jardin du Luxembourg. Even though I know the trails and "track" well at this point, it still holds a sense of mystery and possibility every time I enter. There are still treasures to be discovered. I long to go back.

place de la concorde

paris, france | 2014

I took this photograph from the steps of the Madeleine church. We had just arrived in Paris earlier that day and were about to enter the church to hear Vivaldi's Four Seasons. While delightful, it was a fateful error as Connor and I were overcome with jet lag and [rudely] nearly fell asleep during the performance. We certainly received more than one stink eye from the French. Place de la Concorde is storied, to say the least. This is a majestic view of the rush hour street, the obelisk, l'Assemblé Nationale (the lower house of the bicameral French Parliament), and to the slight right, Dôme des Invalids, a war hospital and the location of Napoleon's remains.

luce & rizou

paris, france | 2014

The locks of love was most famous along the Pont des Arts. Visitors to the bridge attach personalized padlocks to its railing and throw the keys away in the Seine River. The tradition began in 2006 but came to an end when in 2012, sections of the bridge began buckling and crumbling under the weight of the estimated 700,000 locks. Even with repeated effort to remove the locks, it took more than two years (we visited in September 2014) to stop the practice.
