St. Peter's Square, inside of Vatican City, is one of the largest and most beautiful in the world. A draw for Catholic's and all people in the world, it is a wonder to behold. We made our way to the Vatican for the day and arrived early enough to watch the sun rise above the apostles to the East.

restaurant panzirone

Toward the Northeast end of Piazza Navona, we stumbled upon this restaurant after eating at another. This print hangs in my food pantry and I glance at it often. Still to this day, I still can't make out the story of this captured moment. The expression of the waiter walking toward us, the two with backs turned, the fourth man turning back, and the seated customers tell a story. Given that the restaurant has a two-star rating, I wonder if the waiter emerging from the doorway isn't chasing off yet another unhappy customer.

Steps away from the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine stands proudly as the intermediary between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. Made of concrete covered by Proconnesian marble, typically coarse-grained with blue / gray streaks, the sharp relief glows in the soft September evening sun.

The young Raphael was summoned to paint the Vatican frescoes by Pope Julius II in 1508. The works created as part of this commission secured Raphael's reputation as a revolutionary renowned artist. Walking through the Vatican is overwhelming in detail and beauty. Each view is stunning both in and of itself as well as the larger whole.

ponte sant'angelo angels

Ponte Sant’Angelo bridge was designed by Demetrianus, personal architect to the emperor Hadrian, and was completed in 134 CE, likely used to transport materials from central Rome to the construction site across the river.


The angels tell the story of the Passion of Christ chronologically, beginning at the righthand side of the southern end of the bridge and zigzagging towards Castel Sant’Angelo.

One of the most stunning fountains in the middle of the rotunda. We discovered this gem while walking toward the Pantheon. It seems most all other fountains are dwarfed by the well-known Trevi and other Bernini masterpieces, but I fell in love with the symmetry of the fish and the way the water cascades down from the drinking conch. I also love the ascending street and pedestrian women in the background. The fountain was designed by Giacomo della Porta in 1578.

The coffered dome and oculus of the Round Room at the Vatican museum. Toward the end of the Vatican Museum visit, which was fabulous but exhausting. It was a surprisingly hot day (mid-90s) in Rome and the tour was very long. I remember arriving at the Round Room and feeling both fascinated and relieved that we neared the end. Since that day, I've longed to return on a different (cooler) day to relive the experience in a more relaxed, refreshed state.

Designed by Giacomo della Porta and completed in 1575 and later restored by Bernini in 1653, the Fountain of the Moor (Fontana del Moro) is one of the oldest and most beautiful examples of renaissance art. Sadly, the fountain was attacked by vandals with hammers in September 2011, though Italian authorities were able to restore the work.

The linear and angular design of the I.M. Pei pyramid juxtaposed with the round and ornate Louvre strikes the senses. One of my favorite captures, this piece emphasizes perspective, contrast, and geometric symmetry of this beautiful place.

We ascended the top of the Castel Sant'Angelo at just the perfect moment. I photographed several frames as the sun set behind the St. Peter's Basilica. It wasn't until later in reviewing the image that I noticed the young man standing on the rooftop balcony afar. This remains one of my all-time favorite images of Rome.

We arrived at the Campo di Fiori, the oldest market in Rome, in the early evening. Most of the flowers were gone for the day but there was plenty of open air activity. We sat under the awning here and ate and drank while we listened to acoustic guitar and people watched.

We initially visited Rome in 2014 and the fountain was under construction. There was no flowing water and the splendor of the art was masked behind full-height scaffolding. It was a disappointment. This second visit was delightful to enjoy.

Arriving at a fortress and skulking through the corridors of the Castel was a fantasy come true for him. One of the delightful -- if not slightly bewildering --- fixtures throughout Rome are the nasoni ("big noses" named so for the curved spouts). There are are the more than 2,500 free-flowing fresh water fountains throughout the city. Intoduced in the 1870s, there are more than 2,500 free-flowing fresh water fountains throughout the city. There were 5,000 spouts at one time. I can't help but see the nasoni in the light of climate change and conservation. They seem to be a vestige of days past and perhaps a warning of days to come, but an interesting view of cultural norms throughout time.

The fortress is a series of geometric staircases, levels, corridors that worthy of any M.C. Escher art. Exploring every corner and corridor was perhaps the best part of the trip for our six-year-old, who had just gotten a plastic sword and shield outside the Colosseum hours ago, and for our family as a whole.

This image was initially taken as a sort of diversion. Rome is well-known for pickpockets. The moment we descended into the metro system, we sensed we were being "spotted." Rather than followed, a young man was scouting us as we approached. He looked at us, walked ahead, stopped, and would wait for us to draw near again. I stopped to photograph this wall as a way to slow him down and to determine if my hunch was correct. Eventually, once we boarded the crowded subway car, he approached me close by my side. I rather loudly said "back off" to warn him, my family, and those around us. At the next stop, he slipped back into the crowd and moved through the car.
