With the help of jet lag, I awoke at 4:45 a.m. and explored the city before the world awoke, at first light and sunrise. It was a majestic way to experience the city and I captured what are some of my prized photographs. By midday, Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) is teeming with crowds and impossible to photograph like this. Even ten minutes after I arrived, several groups began wandering around.

Built in 1340, Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) is among the most stunning buildings in the entire world. Built in Venetian Gothic style, it served as the residence of the Doge, the head of the Republic, for more than 1000 years.

Italy counts no fewer than 10 leaning towers, two in Pisa alone, and three in the lagoon city of Venice, with its unstable soil. The Campanile of San Giorgio dei Greci, pictured above, was built by Bernardo Ongarin between 1587 and 1592. The Bell Tower started tilting from the beginning of its construction. Its inclination can best be seen from the bridge over Rio de Greci.

plague's end


VENICE, ITALY | 2016


San Giorgio Maggiore, commonly known as Salute, was founded in 1631 to commemorate the end of a terrible outbreak of the plague that began in 1630, and killed a large portion of the Veneto population. It was dedicated to Our Lady of Health (Salute in Italian). The church took 57 years to complete. Each year on November 21, Venetians celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin (Festa della Madonna della Salute), one of the most popular festivals in Venice, by crossing an improvised bridge over the Grand Canal to the Salute Basilica in recognition of freeing Venice from the plague.

Hotel Paganelli, where we stayed along the Grand Canal, has a steep, narrow staircase that ascends to the rooftop terrace with stunning panoramic views. The stairway is closed during "sleeping" hours because it passes tightly against the inner walls of guestrooms and can make a lot of noise. I sweet talked the early morning watchman to unlock the passage and let me climb up, promising to be quiet as a church mouse. Atop, I was rewarded with a fabulous view of the 16th century San Giorgio dei Greci and its leaning tower as well as the San Francesco della Vigna steeple in the background.

Venice is completely tourist-filled during daylight hours. In most spots, there is no hope of catching a quiet moment away from other people, no matter how long you wait. A bit farther away from the Grand Canal and Piazza San Marco, we spotted this quiet resting place and hung out for a few minutes. I had to time it just right, between people crossing the bridge and appearing to the left, but I managed to get a great shot with the gondolier in just the right spot.

This is one of my favorite memories and photographs from our time in Venice. It hangs framed in my kitchen pantry and I discover new details every time I pass by and view it again. We had just finished eating lunch at the cafe before us here just off of the Piazza San Marco. Brad sat where the man in the hat sits now. The young woman standing at far right was our server. I wanted to remember the location of the restaurant as it was perfect for people watching and the food was good. It wasn't until later that I realized the "bag man" walking through. Typically North African, vendors are everywhere in Venice with stretched out blankets, tables, and turnstiles covered with tourist treasures. What I love about this photograph is that so many street photographs, stories reveal themselves long after snapping the shutter and only through revisiting again and again.

The structure and design of the gondola boats are both works of art and exquisite design. The boats include 280 hand-made pieces, up to eight types of wood (lime, oak, mahogany, walnut, cherry, fir, larch and elm), and six coats of black paint. They're always painted black as a result of a 17th-century law a doge enacted to eliminate competition between nobles for the fanciest boat. Each has unique upholstery, trim, and detailing, such as the squiggly-shaped, carved-wood oarlock (fórcula) and metal "hood ornament" (ferro). The building process takes about two months and can cost around $50,000. In most cases, gondoliers own and maintain their own boats. The craft, as well as the coveted license to drive the boat, is often passed through generations of men within a family, from father to son. Well-paid gondoliers can make up to $150,000 per year.

Built in the early years of 17th century, the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) fully enclosed bridge was last point where condemned prisoners could see the beauty of Venice before passing from sentencing in the courthouse to execution in the prison across the bridge.

If you leave the city by train, as we did, the San Simeone Piccolo is the last beautiful church you'll see as you head out. Built in 1738, relatively recent for the city in its architectural history, it draws inspiration to the Roman Pantheon. The dome, sometimes nicknaming the church "the big dome" is shaped as an oval cup on the higher side and covered entirely in lead, making the entire building look higher than it actually is.

We were extremely tired and ravenous, so the first thing we did was drop our bags at the hotel and find a restaurant around the bend. Just over the Ponte San Provolo pictured below, we found an outdoor cafe and indulged on pasta carbonara and bolognese at 9:00 in the morning.
